H770 is the middle chipset of Intel's 700-series for the LGA1700 socket. It launched in early 2023 alongside B760 and supports 12th, 13th and 14th generation Core processors. It offers more chipset connectivity than B760 and supports memory overclocking, but it cannot overclock the CPU. What H770 is and who it is for
Intel's 700-series runs Z790, H770, B760, with the older H610 carrying on beneath them as the entry-level option. H770 replaced H670 and plays the same part: the connectivity of a Z-series board without the overclocking.
On paper that suits someone with a non-K Core i5, i7 or i9 who wants plenty of M.2 slots and USB ports. In practice board makers found that buyers who wanted more than B760 went straight to Z790, so each brand released only a handful of H770 models at most. You will rarely set out to buy H770. It is worth knowing about because, when one is discounted below comparable B760 or Z790 boards, it is a perfectly good board for a stock-speed build.

Compatible CPUs and the BIOS question
H770 boards run 12th and 13th generation Core from their first BIOS. 14th generation processors arrived in late 2023, after the boards went on sale, so an H770 board may need a BIOS update before it will start a 14th generation chip. Because so few H770 models exist and they sell slowly, older stock with an early BIOS is more likely here than with a fast-selling B760 board. Check the CPU support list for the BIOS version your processor needs, and see whether the board can update its BIOS without a CPU installed. A K-series processor will work in an H770 board at stock settings. You simply cannot raise its multiplier, so you are paying for an unlocked chip without being able to use the unlocking.
DDR4 or DDR5
As with every LGA1700 chipset, an H770 board is built for DDR4 or for DDR5 and cannot take the other. The handful of H770 models includes both kinds, and the DDR4 ones usually have DDR4 or D4 in the name. Confirm it on the memory line of the listing. PCIe: CPU lanes and chipset lanes
The processor's lanes are the same whichever 700-series chipset you choose: PCIe 5.0 x16 for the graphics slot and PCIe 4.0 x4 for the main M.2 slot. Whether the graphics slot is actually wired for PCIe 5.0 is a board decision, and a PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot is rare anywhere on LGA1700.
The difference is in the chipset. H770 has more PCIe lanes than B760, more of them at PCIe 4.0, and a wider link back to the processor, so a well-specified H770 board can carry more M.2 slots and fast USB ports without them competing for bandwidth. Treat all of this as potential: what a particular board does with the lanes is what counts, so compare slot and port counts directly.

What to check on the listing
- Memory type. DDR4 or DDR5. It cannot be changed afterwards.
- What you gain over B760. Count M.2 slots, USB ports and expansion slots against a B760 board at a similar price. If the H770 board has no more of them, the chipset's extra lanes are doing nothing for you.
- Power delivery. Important if you are fitting a Core i7 or i9. See motherboard VRM explained.
- Size. The H770 boards that exist are mainly ATX, with a few micro-ATX models. Check the size against your case.
- BIOS version and flashback. Relevant for a 14th generation chip in older stock.
Is H770 worth buying now?
LGA1700 finished with 14th generation Core, so no H770 board will ever take a newer processor. The platform still makes sense if you own an LGA1700 chip or are buying one at a good price, and within it H770 is simply a B760 board with more connectivity. Can you overclock on H770?
You can overclock memory and use XMP profiles. You cannot overclock the processor: on LGA1700 that needs a Z690 or Z790 board with a K-series chip.
Is H770 better than B760?
The chipset has more PCIe lanes and a wider link to the processor, which allows more M.2 slots and ports. Whether a particular H770 board is better than a particular B760 board depends on how the maker used them, so compare the two boards directly.
