AMD A620 chipset guide

Last updated

A620 is AMD's budget chipset for the AM5 socket. It launched in 2023, some months after the first AM5 boards, to bring the cost of a Ryzen 7000 build down. It does not allow CPU overclocking and has no PCIe 5.0, but it runs the same processors and DDR5 memory as any other AM5 board. If you want a plain, inexpensive base and will not tinker, it does the job. Current prices are on the A620 deals page.

Where A620 sits

A620 is the bottom tier of the 600-series for AM5, below B650. In AMD's naming, X is the enthusiast tier, B is mainstream and A is basic; motherboard chipsets explained has the full picture. In early 2025 AMD added B840 to the 800-series, which has much the same restrictions as A620 under a B name. The two now overlap.

The graphics slot and the main M.2 slot connect straight to the processor and run at PCIe 4.0. Devices that go through the chipset run at PCIe 3.0 at most.

What you give up, in practice

CPU overclocking. You cannot raise the processor's multiplier on A620. Ryzen chips already boost themselves automatically to near their limits, so for most people the loss is small. Memory overclocking is still allowed: you can enable an EXPO or XMP profile and run DDR5 at its rated speed, which matters more to everyday performance than CPU overclocking does.

PCIe 5.0. A PCIe 4.0 x16 slot does not hold back current graphics cards in any way you would notice, and a PCIe 4.0 SSD is fast enough for nearly everyone. See do you need PCIe 5.0.

Extras. This is where the saving really comes from, and it is a matter of the boards, not the chipset. A620 boards generally have simpler power delivery, smaller or no heatsinks over it, fewer M.2 slots, fewer rear USB ports and basic audio.

Compatible CPUs and memory

A620 boards support Ryzen 7000, Ryzen 8000G and Ryzen 9000 processors, with DDR5 only. AMD has said AM5 is supported through 2027 and beyond, so an A620 board bought today shares the upgrade path of dearer boards.

Two cautions. First, power delivery: budget boards are designed around 65 W processors such as a Ryzen 5. Higher-power chips will often work but may not sustain their full speed under long loads, and some boards do not list them at all. Check the board's CPU support list before pairing A620 with a Ryzen 9. Second, BIOS age: an A620 board made before Ryzen 8000G or Ryzen 9000 existed may need a BIOS update before it will start one. A BIOS flashback button solves that, but it is less common on budget boards, so check. BIOS updates and CPU compatibility explains the options.

A620 against B650 and B840

B650 adds CPU overclocking, PCIe 4.0 chipset lanes and, on the whole, better-equipped boards. When a B650 board is reduced to within a few pounds of an A620 one, the B650 board is usually the better buy.

B840 is close to A620 in what it allows. B840 boards are newer designs. Choose between them board by board: slots, ports, WiFi and price.

What varies by board

Who should buy A620

A620 suits an office or family PC, a build around a Ryzen 8000G chip using its integrated graphics, or a budget gaming PC with a Ryzen 5 and a mid-range graphics card. It is a poor match for high-power processors, several NVMe drives, or anyone who wants to tune the CPU. How much to spend on a motherboard shows where A620 fits by build budget.

Questions people ask

Can you overclock on an A620 motherboard?

Not the CPU. A620 does not allow CPU overclocking. Memory overclocking is allowed, so EXPO and XMP profiles can be enabled.

Does A620 support PCIe 5.0?

No. The graphics slot and main M.2 slot run at PCIe 4.0, and the chipset provides PCIe 3.0 lanes.

Can an A620 board run a Ryzen 7 or Ryzen 9?

A620 uses the AM5 socket, so the chips fit, and 65 W models are generally well suited. For higher-power processors, check the CPU support list of the specific board, because budget boards have simpler power delivery.

Is A620 good enough for gaming?

Yes, with a suitable processor. The graphics card gets a full PCIe 4.0 x16 slot and memory profiles work. What you lose is CPU overclocking, PCIe 5.0 and the extra ports of dearer boards.
