AMD B650 chipset guide

Last updated

B650 is the mainstream chipset from the first generation of AM5 boards, launched in 2022. It allows CPU and memory overclocking and supports every AM5 Ryzen processor, and because so many models were made there is a wide choice of older stock. Its weakness is that it guarantees little beyond that: PCIe 5.0, WiFi and M.2 count all depend on the board. Live prices are on the B650 deals page.

Where B650 sits

AM5 launched with X670E, X670, B650E and B650. B650 was the most affordable of the four until A620 arrived in 2023. It uses a single chipset chip, where the X670 pair use two. In early 2025 AMD replaced it with B850, which is a refresh of the same design with a PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot made compulsory.

B650 is therefore an older chipset on a current socket. That is a comfortable position: the boards take the newest Ryzen chips, and their age is the reason they get reduced.

On B650 the most AMD guarantees is PCIe 5.0 for an M.2 slot, and even that is board dependent: plenty of B650 boards are PCIe 4.0 throughout. If a listing does not say PCIe 5.0 or Gen5 against the M.2 slot, assume it is PCIe 4.0.

Compatible CPUs and memory

B650 supports Ryzen 7000, Ryzen 8000G and Ryzen 9000 processors. Memory is DDR5 only, with EXPO and XMP profiles; there are no DDR4 AM5 boards. AMD has said AM5 is supported through 2027 and beyond.

The catch is the BIOS. B650 boards were built for Ryzen 7000. Support for Ryzen 8000G and Ryzen 9000 was added by BIOS updates, and a board made before those chips existed may have sat in a warehouse with its original BIOS. Fit a Ryzen 9000 chip to it and it may not start. Boards with a BIOS flashback button can be updated from a USB stick with no processor fitted, which removes the problem. Without one you would need to borrow an older chip or ask the seller. See BIOS updates and CPU compatibility.

Ryzen 8000G processors are PCIe 4.0 parts with fewer lanes than other AM5 chips. With one fitted, some boards run a secondary M.2 slot slower or disable it; the manual lists this.

B650 against its neighbours

B650E adds guaranteed PCIe 5.0 for the graphics slot and an M.2 slot. Current graphics cards lose nothing noticeable in a PCIe 4.0 x16 slot, so for most builds this is about the long term, not today.

B850 is the newer equivalent. It starts Ryzen 9000 chips without an update and always has a PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot. Processor performance is identical. B850 vs B650 compares them in detail; the short version is to compare individual boards and let price decide.

A620 removes CPU overclocking and drops the chipset lanes to PCIe 3.0. A620 boards are also usually more basic in power delivery and ports.

What varies by board

Almost everything that you will notice day to day:

Who should buy B650

B650 suits most gaming and general-purpose builds: one graphics card, one or two NVMe drives, a Ryzen 5 or Ryzen 7. Buy it when a well-equipped board costs clearly less than its B850 equivalent. If the gap is small, take the newer board for the BIOS convenience. If you are fitting a Ryzen 9 and working it hard, choose a B650 board with strong power delivery or move up a tier.

Because B650 has been on sale since 2022, opened and returned boards do turn up. AM5 socket pins are on the board and bend easily, so read our Warehouse guide before buying one that way.

What to check on the listing

Questions people ask

Does B650 support PCIe 5.0?

Only on some boards, and only for an M.2 slot. B650 does not guarantee a PCIe 5.0 graphics slot. If you want PCIe 5.0 for both graphics and storage guaranteed, look at B650E, X670E, X870 or X870E.

Will a B650 motherboard work with Ryzen 9000?

Yes, with a recent enough BIOS. A board that still has its original BIOS may need updating before a Ryzen 9000 chip will start, so a BIOS flashback button is useful.

Can you overclock on B650?

Yes. B650 allows both CPU and memory overclocking. How far you get depends on the power delivery of the individual board.

Is B650 still worth buying now that B850 exists?

Yes, if it is cheaper for the same features. The chipsets are closely related and processor performance is the same. B850 adds a guaranteed PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot and newer boards.

Does B650 support DDR4 memory?

No. All AM5 boards, B650 included, use DDR5 only.
